Fort William Mountain Festival prize for teenager

A teenager's passion for the outdoors has won him a new award set up by the Fort William Mountain Festival.

Zeki Basan, 15, from Speyside, is the first recipient of the Scottish Youth Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture.

The festival's organisers said Zeki's interests in science, conservation and bushcraft made him "a worthy winner".

The teenager, who has dyslexia, helped to deliver a bushcraft workshop at 2014's Moray Outdoor Learning Festival.

The festival's eighth Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture has been awarded to Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) stalwart Robin Campbell.

Mr Campbell's involvement with the organisation goes back more than 50 years.

Zeki and Mr Campbell will receive their awards during the festival which runs from 18-22 February.

The festival's Mike Pescod said the pair were well deserving of their accolades.

He said: "Robin Campbell is a perfect example of the importance of presenting the Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture.

"Robin has made a huge contribution to mountain culture but has never sought recognition or been fully recognised by others for what he has achieved.

"Receiving this prestigious award will go some way to demonstrate his invaluable contribution made over many years.

He added: "Zeki Basan is at the start of his lifetime in the outdoors but is already a role model for other young people of what can be achieved both for oneself and for the greater good of our wild places.

"I hope he will be further inspired by receiving this inaugural award and will continue to inspire others with his passion for the outdoors."
