Colin Montgomerie cancer appeal gets £300,000 donation

Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie has welcomed a £300,000 donation towards his campaign to build a new cancer unit in Aberdeen in memory of his mother.

Gas industry firm BG Group has stepped in with the "major milestone" as Mr Montgomerie hopes to raise £3m to build the Maggie's Centre.

The charity has been working with the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation, which was established by the golfer and his family in tribute to his mother.

She died of lung cancer in 1991.

The winning Ryder Cup captain said: "This marks a major milestone in the campaign and is the largest donation we have received.

"We are absolutely delighted to benefit from such incredibly generous support from BG Group.

"We are moving ever closer to realising our vision of creating a Maggie's Centre in Aberdeen, and giving people with cancer the support they need from the centre's unique, caring environment."

BG Group vice president of UK upstream, Neil McCulloch, said: "The community has taken Monty's Maggie's Appeal to heart and we are delighted to support the appeal both through our initial donation and by forming a long-term partnership with Maggie's Centre."
