Plans for a Highland Games discovery centre on the site of the annual Braemar Gathering have been approved.

It is hoped the facility - estimated to cost about £2.5m - can be an icon for Braemar and attract worldwide interest.

The two-storey building will replace the existing main west grandstand at the Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park.

The Royal Deeside location is home to the famous Braemar Gathering, attended by members of the Royal family.

The application was approved by the planning committee of the Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) at a meeting in Ballater.
