The Scottish Prison Service has said there are no plans in place to return young offenders to the new HMP Grampian in Peterhead.

It opened in 2014 but a wing was damaged in a riot just weeks later.

The area in question is still empty and young offenders are now housed at Polmont in Falkirk.

Justice Secretary Michael Matheson said they would continue to be located there, to help them receive the best and most relevant support.

He said the ultimate decision was a matter for the Scottish Prison Service (SPS).

An SPS spokesman said no timescale had been set for when that might happen.

HMP Grampian opened as a replacement for HMP Peterhead and HMP Aberdeen.
