Scottish Championship side Queen of the South have confirmed plans to "upgrade" their artificial pitch after one season on the current surface.

The club made the switch from traditional grass at its Palmerston Park ground last summer.

The Dumfries side said it had been "delighted" with the new surface which had avoided postponing four games.

A joint statement with synthetic turf firm Act Global said work on the upgrade would start on 26 May.

The company's managing director Chris Clapham said: "We wanted to recognise the success that Queens have had on the pitch and acknowledge the value from our association with Queen of the South FC."

The joint statement said Act Global had agreed to upgrade the surface to a state of the art system during the summer break.

"The new surface contains the very latest artificial grass supplied by Bonar Yarns, the second largest yarn supplier in the world who are based in Dundee," it added.

"A proven system that will deliver a surface fit for the very top flight of Scottish football."

The club has apologised that the pitch will be unable to be used for rentals in the summer.

It said the work had to begin on 26 May in order to allow the first team some time to play on it before the new season started.
