Man, 86, dead and woman, 82, critical after Scottish Borders crash

A pensioner has died and another is in a critical condition after a crash in the Scottish Borders.

An 86-year-old man who was a passenger in a grey Nissan Note died at the scene of the collision between Eddleston and Leadburn on Monday afternoon.

The driver of the car - an 82-year-old woman - was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

The 40-year-old man behind the wheel of a white Ford Kuga involved in the crash was also taken to the hospital.

He was discharged after treatment.

Police said the A703 was closed for about six hours following the crash which happened at about 15:05.

Sgt Barry Sommerville said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died, and our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

"We are appealing to anyone who was in the area and saw what happened to contact us, as your information could be vital.

"I would also ask anyone with any dashcam or CCTV footage that could help with our investigation to get in touch, external."
