Castle restorations and a school overhaul are among the properties shortlisted in this year's design awards organised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) Wales with Hirwaun Fire Station, Rhondda Cynon Taff, selected for its sustainability and energy efficiency.

The new-look Morriston Comprehensive School, Swansea, has been shortlisted for its community benefits.

A glass visitor entrance at Caernarfon Castle has attracted nominations in both the tourism and conservation categories, along with the restoration of Cardigan Castle.

The redevelopment of Barry Pumphouse, in the Vale of Glamorgan, has seen it nominated in the regeneration category.

The Esplanade, Llandudno, Conwy county, formerly five Victorian townhouses converted into a hotel and remodelled for disabled people, carers and families, is among the regeneration finalists.

The Denbigh HWB, in Denbighshire, which provides facilities for young people, including apartments and educational training facilities, is one of the 30 finalists in six categories.

Winners in the competition, which includes a nomination for Swansea's Castle Quarter, will be announced at an awards ceremony in Cardiff in May.
