Landlord Wayne Jones says he found the pub damaged on Friday morning

The pub featured in the hit series Welcome to Wrexham has reopened after a fire scare.

Wayne Jones, landlord of The Turf, initially said it would be shut until further notice after a blaze broke out in the boiler room.

But later on Friday afternoon, Mr Jones said the pub was allowed to trade would "somehow" be open.

Wrexham face Gillingham at the Racecourse Ground, next to the pub, in League Two on Saturday.

Mr Jones also said The Turf's marquee was also broken into during the night, with equipment damaged.

"We've sadly had a fire in our boiler room," Mr Jones said, external on Facebook and X, formerly known as Twitter, earlier.

"Everybody is safe but the damage caused means we will remain shut until further notice."

But he later posted again to say the pub was going to reopen imminently.

"Wow, that was scary," he said, thanking those who had shown their support.

"We've had people in [to look at the problem] and are legally allowed to trade."

What is The Turf?

The Turf has attracted global visitors since featuring on the Disney+ documentary series Welcome to Wrexham.

The show, currently in its second season, has tracked the fortunes of the club since its takeover by film star Ryan Reynolds and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator and actor Rob McElhenney.

Along with several visits from the club's owners, fellow Hollywood stars Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell have also been pictured having pints in the pub on match days.

The football club itself, the third oldest professional club in the world, was founded in The Turf in 1864 by cricketers who wanted something to do during the winter months, external.

The only other time the pub has been forced to shut its doors in the past 15 years was after being "drunk dry" by Wrexham fans in April when they sealed promotion back to the Football League.
