Corus's former Shotton steel site set for homes and hotel

A big section of the former Corus steelworks' site at Deeside could be redeveloped with housing, a hotel and technology park being built if plans get the go ahead.

Site owner Pochin Rosemound wants to develop 172 acres (70 hectares) of land off Welsh Road, Garden City.

Flintshire councillors are being recommended to approve the outline plans at a meeting on Friday.

Pochin bought the land, including the steelworks' general office, in 2010.

A report to councillors says the land is part of 200 hectare Deeside Enterprise Zone which includes the former RAF site which is also earmarked for major redevelopment bringing "investment and new jobs, particularly in the manufacturing sector".

Developers anticipate building 600 homes on the Garden City site, known locally as Shotton steelworks, and create an open parkland area to create a "walkable neighbourhood" linking with existing footpaths and cycle routes as well as Hawarden Bridge railway station.

The report says listed buildings on the site, including the former general office built in 1907, are "proposed to be retained" along with the adjacent garden.

It was originally created for recreational use by steelworkers and although it is currently overgrown it also could be restored as part of the redevelopment.
