Youth-led cinema set to open in Blaenau Ffestiniog

A Gwynedd town is set to get a cinema for the first in more than 40 years.

Around £100,000 of funding has been secured allowing the installation of a 50-seat auditorium with digital cinema system in the old police station at Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Cellb and youth training charity Gwallgofiaid are behind the project with funding from the Arts Council of Wales and Magnox.

It will be the first cinema in the town since the Forum shut in the 1970s.

The cinema opens on 22 July with a showing of Steven Spielberg's The BFG.

Profits made from the cinema will be reinvested into youth projects.

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales, Rhys Roberts from Cellb said: "We've been doing youth media projects for around 10 years now and have been working with the local school.

"We did a survey of what the young people wanted and a cinema was top of the list."
