Six Nations: Police give alcohol warning to fans

Police are urging fans to enjoy the rugby without drinking too much

As Wales prepare to kick off their Six Nations campaign, fans are being warned they face being fined if they buy alcohol for anyone who is drunk.

Fines of up to £1,000 could be imposed on anyone caught.

Up to 80 police officers will be on patrol in Cardiff city centre at peak times as the number of revellers is expected to reach up to 180,000.

An extra 16,500 train seats will be available to cope with demand while Cardiff Bus has to move some services.

Fans are being advised that they may have to wait up to an hour before being able to board trains after the match due to lengthy queues.

Services to the valleys, west Wales, Crewe, Cheltenham Spa, Newport and Ebbw Vale are all expected to be extremely busy.

Cardiff Bus said it is running its full Friday service with last buses to most areas of Cardiff leaving at 23:20 GMT.

From 15:30 GMT, it will not be able to run services into the centre of the city, so buses will move to Greyfriars Road, Churchill Way and Tudor Street.

Wales face England in the first match of the tournament, which kicks off at 20:05 GMT.

Welsh Secretary Stephen Crabb, visiting Network Rail's operations centre in Cardiff, said the Friday night game would be a "real test" of road and rail systems.
