Building being demolished after fire in Cardiff

Contractors are demolishing a disused three-storey building in the Adamsdown area of Cardiff after a fire.

Roads remain closed and some evacuated residents have yet to return home due to safety concerns following the blaze at Pearl Street on Monday lunchtime.

A joint police and fire service investigation has begun into the cause of the fire which led to the collapse of the roof.

Road closures are affecting Agate Street, Splott Road and Pearl Street.

A rest centre has been set up for residents at the nearby Star Centre.

Police and fire services remain at the scene and the operation is being co-ordinated from a multi-agency command room at Cardiff Bay Police Station.

At its height about 40 firefighters tackled the blaze at the former bingo hall and club.

Cardiff council has appointed a contractor to deal with the demolition.

South Wales Fire service group manager Jason Evans said: "Until the area can be made safe restrictions will remain in place."

Supt Andy Valentine, of Cardiff Bay police station, said: "I want to thank the public for their continued support and co-operation and advise motorists to avoid the area and seek an alternative route, particularly during rush hour."
