King: 'It is vital that we understand our history'

King Charles has said it is "vital that we understand our history" in order to "guide us to make the right choices in the future".

Speaking at a Commonwealth leaders summit in Samoa, he said: "I understand from listening to people across the Commonwealth how the most painful aspects of our past continue to resonate."

This comes after leaders of some Commonwealth countries have called for the UK to apologise and pay reparations for its role in the slave trade.

Ahead of the summit, Downing Street said reparations would not be on the agenda, but several leaders are expected to defy the UK and hold discussions on the issue.
