Farmers battle through flooded road

A video has captured farmers on quad bikes battling through a flooded road in the Yorkshire Dales after heavy rain.

The road was flooded on Monday morning on the approach to Haylands Bridge, which crosses the River Ure close to its confluence with Gayle Beck, near the market town of Hawes.

The video from Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage owner Stuart Lunn shows the depths of the water.

Mr Lunn said farmers had cleared their sheep from the flood plain in advance of the rainfall.

"The road was only blocked for a couple of hours, and locals know the diversion routes," he said.

"You can always get up and from Wensleydale whatever the weather."

A flood alert for the Upper River Ure was no longer in force, according to the Environment Agency (EA).

"There is no longer a threat of flooding, though standing water and debris may still remain," the EA added.

The government advice on flooding is not to walk or drive through flood water.
