Metro drivers say goodbye as old train scrapped

Two Metro drivers shared an emotional experience watching a train they drove torn to pieces before their very eyes.

Retired Lesley Williams, 67, and current driver Jon Doughty, 59, visited a specialist scrapyard in County Durham where an old Tyne and Wear Metro carriage was taken apart to be recycled.

"It's been part of my life for 21 years," said Jon, as he watched carriage 4067 being scrapped.

Lesley took away a piece of the train as a memento, which will be used to decorate her summer house.

So far, 38 Metro carriages have been decommissioned, as operator Nexus gradually rolls out its new fleet of trains.
