Syrian leader addresses UN General Assembly for first time in almost 60 years

Syrian president Ahmed Al-Sharaa became the first representative of Syria to address world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly for almost sixty years.

Al-Sharaa became the interim president of Syria in January after he led the rebel offensive that overthrew Bashar al-Assad.

"Syria was reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world", Al-Sharaa said in his address.

He also said Syria stood firmly with the people of Gaza, but did not address the sectarian violence that has broken out in parts of Syria since he took power.
