Watch: Starlings give city a spectacular show
Residents were treated to a spectacular show on Saturday evening as thousands of starlings congregated in a remarkable murmuration.
The birds were spotted on Cowbridge Road West in Ely, Cardiff.
While it looks like aerial bird ballet, the birds do this to deter possible predators, external which are confused by the swirling masses.
Studies have shown that individual starlings move around within the flock to try to minimise their time on the edge where they are most vulnerable.
Starling populations have been in decline since the 1960s, according to the British Trust for Ornithology.
