'It's the first gay wedding the church has accepted'

John Hall, 39, and Les Hall, 50, became the first same-sex couple to have a church wedding in Durham.

"We were going to have it in a registry office and we're over the moon that it's in a church because it means so much for us both," explained John.

The Methodist church voted to allow same-sex weddings two years ago, with Elvet Methodist Church being the first to take action.

"This isn't complex, this is just about people loving each other and we're over the moon to be able to celebrate it in our church," said Minister Rev John Squares.

Coincidentally the couple, both gardeners, also share a birthday which they also celebrated on their wedding day.
