Don Jones: 'We weren't heroes'

Don Jones was 17 he signed up for the Navy and after training he applied to be a gunner.

He was one of the first to land on D-Day. He was born in Mold in 1925 and left school at 14.

He wanted to join the Navy straight away but was too young. Instead he was a founder member of Mold Air Training Corps.

He landed on Sword Beach in the first wave on D-Day on a Landing Craft Tank protecting the troops as he manned the port side gun.

We Were There aims to collect as many first-hand accounts as possible by 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, to preserve veterans' accounts for future generations.

The BBC is currently working on the project with a number of partners including the Normandy Memorial Trust and Royal British Legion. Some of the stories collected may be shared with our partners and used on BBC News platforms.
