Legend of shape-shifting witch 'buried head first'

While the witches of Pendle are Lancashire's most famous, the legend of Meg Shelton is well-known in Preston.

Tales of the 17th Century sorceress abound in the village of Woodplumpton, where she was apparently buried face down or possibly even head first after several escapes from her grave in St Anne's Church.

BBC Radio Lancashire's Hidden Lancashire series spoke to historian Dave Pearce about the supposedly shape-shifting "Flyde Hag".

"Stories about Meg have been handed down as folk tales, and it's not hard to imagine how people might have been afraid of the woman. According to legend, she had magical powers," he said.
