Fundraiser for carer after car set alight in riot

A fundraiser for a carer whose car was set alight and destroyed during violent riots in Middlesbrough has raised thousands of pounds.

Brendan Nwabichie returned home from a 12-hour shift to find the remnants of his overturned vehicle outside his flat.

The Nigerian, who is currently a Teesside University student, said he "went to the bathroom and cried".

A fundraising page set up by his employer, Clare's Care UK, has raised more than £37,000 for a new car.

Violent demonstrations taking place across the country since the killing of three children in Southport have seen considerable damage caused in towns and cities, including Middlesbrough and Hartlepool.
