Archaeological dig 'like a close community'

A team of volunteer archaeologists are spending a week excavating a site on Hartlepool headland, in the hopes they can unearth a 19th Century lighthouse which was demolished in 1916.

"A lot of these people have never dug before, never tried it and they’re wanting to come back over and over again," said Dr Emma Watson, who is leading the excavation.

It comes in the same year as the 110th anniversary of the infamous Hartlepool Bombardment during World War One.

The Bombardment of Hartlepool, Scarborough and Whitby by the German Navy in 1914 was intended to damage ship building and engineering works.

A second dig in the excavation is targeting the site of the original WW1 battery fixture which took the place of the lighthouse during wartime.
