At least 31 people have been killed and more than 30 others injured after a bus fell into a gorge in India's north-eastern state of Meghalaya.

The bus was travelling between the states of Assam and Tripura when the accident happened near Tamseng village.

The number of dead could rise and rescuers are trying to reach trapped passengers, police said.

India has the world's highest number of road deaths, with more than 110,000 people killed every year in accidents.

Most are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and ageing vehicles.
