A murder investigation has been launched following the fatal shooting of a man in Ballyfermot in Dublin.

The man died after he was shot a number of times at a house.

The attack happened in Croftwood Park, Ballyfermot, in the west of the city, at about 11:00 local time on Monday.

Gardaí (Irish police) said the victim, who was 55, sustained a number of gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, which has been cordoned off for forensic examination.

They said the "planned and targeted shooting" had "all the hallmarks of a gang-related attack".

The victim was shot several times when he opened the door to a caller.

Two cars are thought to have been used in the attack, a blue Ford Fiesta and a Skoda Octavia, Irish broadcaster RTÉ have reported, external.

The Ford Fiesta was found burnt out in nearby Le Fanu Drive, while a Skoda was set on fire in the Monskfield area of Clondalkin.

RTÉ said it is understood that the victim lived in England and his mother lived in the house where he was shot.

Gardaí have appealed to motorists and pedestrians who may have noticed anything unusual in the area between 10:30 and 11:30 local time to get in touch.
