Belarus protest: Arrests amid heavy police presence

Thousands of people have defied a heavy police presence in the Belarusian capital to step up their protest against the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko.

Police have cordoned off Independence Square and have already made numerous arrests.

The opposition says the 9 August election was rigged in favour of a president who has been in power for 26 years.
