Guernsey States staff costs increase by £14m

The total cost to the States of Guernsey of employing its staff increased by about £14m during 2009.

The figure revealed in the 2011 budget showed an 8.8% increase in staffing costs, with staff numbers up by 124.

Treasury and Resources Minister Charles Parkinson said he was "concerned" about the growth in staff numbers and costs.

However, he said it was "premature" to look at introducing controls on the basis of one year's data.

The Treasury and Resources Department said the main reasons were the filling of vacant posts and the creation of 80 new full-time posts across the departments.
