Guernsey to recycle more plastic

  • Published

The number of types of household plastic which can recycled in Guernsey has increased.

The States said items such as yoghurt pots and food trays can now be processed using new technology.

It means different types of plastic can be separated out before they are recycled.

Last year the island exceeded its target to recycle 50% of household rubbish.

Scott Ogier, deputy public services minister, said: "This initiative has been made possible by working with a new facility in the UK that will handle the processing.

"It uses innovative new technology to separate out the different types of plastic automatically before they are recycled, something that previously hasn't been possible."

Liam Bourgaize, of Mayside Recycling, said the initiative was a "big step forward" in the effort to increase recycling rates.
