Guernsey chief minister rules to be debated

The rules about who is eligible to be Guernsey's chief minister will be debated by the States.

Currently only those who have served for four of the last eight years in the States are eligible for the role.

The States Assembly and Constitution Committee has suggested this rule be permanently revoked.

If the motion is approved, the current nominations would be null and void and new ones taken on the day of the vote - 1 May.

This would mean all of the successful candidates at last week's election could be put forward for the position.

If approved, the proposals would also suspend parts of the rule covering the nominations for the role so the nomination could be made on the same day as the election.

If rejected an election will be held involving the two eligible candidates, Deputy-Elect Jonathan Le Tocq and Deputy Lyndon Trott.

The issue of the eligibility requirements for the chief minister was last discussed by the States in May 2011.
