States of Guernsey hopes to charge for town car parking

Guernsey's Treasury and Resources Department is hoping to make money for the States by charging for car parking in St Peter Port.

It has applied to the Environment Department for permission to refurbish Mill Cottage, opposite the fire station on Arsenal Road.

The plans involve resurfacing the car park, installing new lighting and putting up a chain link fence.

The spaces are currently used by a number of States departments.

Deputy Roger Domaille, the environment minister, has said he opposes paid parking.

Mill Cottage is in an area that has a number of one and 10-hour parking spaces.

As with all public car parks in the island, parking in these areas is currently free of charge.
