Guernsey dog owners face fines over mess

Guernsey dog walkers who fail to clear up after their pets will face a £100 on-the-spot fine.

Police officers and staff from the Environment Department are working together to cut dog fouling.

It follows an increase in what fixed penalties can be given out by police, which the States approved in July.

The initiative will also involve leaflets being given to dog walkers to raise awareness of the dangers associated with exposed dog faeces.

Sgt Jason Savident said: "Dog owners who witness or know of dog owners who repeatedly let their dogs foul in a public area without clearing it up should contact Guernsey Police with details so steps can be taken to stop this most anti-social form of littering."

He said repeat offenders could be taken to court.

Kevin Lesbirel, from the Environment Department, advised those walking dogs to keep them on a lead as with the days shortening dog owners may not always see where their pet had fouled.
