Guernsey Airport landing system to return to aid pilots

A system that helps pilots land in low visibility should be back in place by the end of the month, Guernsey Airport's director has said.

The instrument landing system tells planes their distance from the ground.

It was removed in July during work to move the runway 120m west as part of an £80m refurbishment project.

Colin Le Ray said the system for eastern approaches was successfully tested in December, but the western system was still out of commission.

He said some work needed to be completed by the project contractor before the system could be tested by a specially-equipped plane, which he hoped would happen before the end of January.

At the moment, without the system, planes are unable to land in the west when there is low visibility, which has led to flight disruptions.
