Plans to move the war memorial in St Peter Port to a new piazza to allow greater access have been revealed.

The designs, currently with Guernsey's Environment Department, would also see the town's sunken gardens redeveloped.

A previous option of an underground car park at the site has been scrapped, the war memorial committee has announced.

It had originally hoped to have the redevelopment completed in time for the World War One centenary commemorations.

The proposal is to move the War Memorial to the back of the Sunken Garden.

Those behind the plan would create a level piazza stretching back to the original monument wall at the top of Smith Street.

Organisers said it would let many more people take part in the annual remembrance service.

Major Bob Place from the war memorial committee said: "It will be a really suitable area to commemorate our war dead from all the wars.

"It will be a pleasant area to sit and watch the world go by."

The war memorial committee said once the plans are approved it will look at funding opportunities.
