Former House of Keys' Speaker portrait on display

Mr Cannan retired from Manx politics this year

Russian-born artist Svetlana Cameron unveiled her portrait of former Speaker of the House of Keys David Cannan in the Legislative Buildings on Tuesday.

The painting by the Manx based artist was commissioned by the Office of the Clerk of Tynwald and will sit permanently in the Speakers' Gallery.

Mr Cannan was the speaker of the House of Keys between 2000 and 2002 and retired as a MHK this year.

All former Speakers are painted upon retirement from Manx politics.

Ms Cameron said it has been a "real honour" to carry out the commission.

The painting, which took more than two-and-a-half months to complete, will be on display to the public from 25 October.

David Cannan, announced his retirement from Manx politics in April 2011, after 29 years as a Member of the House of Keys. He represented Michael since his election in 1982.
