Isle of Man police to use 'covert vehicles' in drink-drive campaign

Isle of Man police will go "undercover in covert vehicles" during the festive period as part of a Christmas drink-drive campaign.

The Manx constabulary said the crackdown on drink-drivers would also include the use of recording equipment to catch culprits.

Last year, 16 people were charged with drink-driving offences over Christmas.

Supt Kevin Wilson said offenders would face penalties of fines "and we can also send people to prison".

"We will have high-visibility patrols across the island but we will also have plain car patrols," he said.

"The message is very simple - if you are going out for a drink, leave the car at home.

"Likewise, if you have been partying the night before, make sure you are fit to drive in the morning - if there is any doubt in your mind, don't get behind the wheel."

The Manx government's annual drink drive campaign was officially launched on 5 December.

MHK Leonard Singer said that "far too many people" still risked driving after having a drink.

"It is the height of selfishness and stupidity to do so," he said.
