Archibald Knox joins Bee Gees in blue plaque honour

A commemorative blue plaque has been unveiled at the former Douglas home of artist Archibald Knox.

Douglas Council said the honour has been bestowed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of his birth.

Working for London store Liberty & Co, Knox established himself as the foremost designer in the Art Nouveau movement.

His designs in silver, pewter, carpet, pottery, jewellery and textiles made him a household name.

The blue plaque was unveiled by the Mayor of Douglas at 70 Athol Street at 10:00 BST.

It is just the second blue plaque to be awarded by Douglas Borough Council, who also recognised the Bee Gees last April.

The council is planning a further tribute to Knox in one of the sunken gardens on Douglas promenade.

A special concert will also be held at Peel Cathedral on Wednesday to celebrate the artist's "spirituality and creativity".
