The local authority could bring in parking restrictions on a road near Onchan Park

New parking rules could be introduced to stop vehicles "clogging up" a busy road through a Manx village, the local authority has said.

Onchan Commissioners' proposals could see 18 to 24 hour limits introduced on Belgravia Road and Royal Drive, unless vehicles have been given a permit.

Chairman Zara Lewin said it would stop non-residents parking for long periods and cut congestion at Onchan Park.

A consultation asking for residents' views is open until 1 December.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Ms Lewin said the area was "vital" to the nearby amenity, and a shortage of parking spaces had "an impact" on the facility and the people who wanted to use it.

She said vehicles were often left for long periods of time, which was "not fair" on residents.

The authority has already received 15 responses, predominantly from people who live next to the road, Ms Lewin said.

She said each submission so far had been in "favour of a change" of some sort.

However, she said while some suggested ideas not previously considered by the authority, others highlighted some potentially negative aspects of the proposals.

The authority would "look at the recommendations" before approaching the Department of Infrastructure with a proposed solution "hopefully everyone is happy with", she added.
