Waitrose may take Jersey goods to UK shops

Producers in Jersey bidding for their goods to be sold in new Waitrose shops in the island have been told their products could also be sold in the UK.

Waitrose has bought the Safeway shop and Checkers supermarkets at Red Houses and Rue des Pres in Jersey.

It held sessions for producers to pitch their goods for sale in its stores, which will open from February.

Graham Cassie, the store's brand development manager, told BBC Jersey that the goods may be sold elsewhere.

He said: "This is a potential route for suppliers to look to grow their business by supplying Waitrose on a wider scale.

"Over the years a number of producers that started as local suppliers, just supplying one store, have grown into national suppliers supplying 240 Waitrose stores."
