Checkers at Rue de Pres in St Saviour closes after 18 years

Charities in Jersey will benefit from the closure of Sandpiper owned supermarkets.

On Saturday Checkers in Rue des Pres will close its doors for the final time after 18 years to make way for the UK chain Waitrose.

Checkers said remaining stock will be given to local charities.

Lynn Wilton, from the Association of Jersey charities, said it could be the largest donation of goods to charity in the island to date.

'Massive benefit'

She said: "They can be used by all the charities from using them in their homes, care homes, rest bite centres and social clubs.

"All these items can be used, we have whisks, we have printing things, all sorts of unusual items that can be used with massive benefit to all of them."

Duncan Langston, store manager, said he had mixed feelings about the takeover.

He said: "It is the end of an era, it is tinged with a little sadness because there have been a lot of fun times in store.

"The good news is there is a positive outlook for the future, everybody is transferring to the new business so we are all happy."
