Jersey's new RNLI-trained lifeguards have begun work over the bank holiday weekend.

It is the first time the RNLI has provided beach lifeguards in the island.

Thirteen lifeguards are patrolling St Ouen's, St Brelades Bay and Plemont beaches between 10am and 6pm until Sunday 2 October.

Safety patrols will start on Greve de Lecq on Saturday 2 July in time for the peak summer season.

In addition, 11 lifeguards have travelled from Australia.

The RNLI-trained group has had three weeks of intensive instruction.

The lifeguards have practiced various rescue and first aid-based scenarios to test life-saving skills and their ability to work as a team, the RNLI said.

Beach users are advised to swim between red and yellow flags set up by the lifeguards, and read the safety advice at any beach entrance.
