Licence points system proposed for Jersey driving offences

Jersey could get a system of penalty points to deter drivers from speeding under plans announced by the island's transport minister.

Deputy Kevin Lewis wants a system similar to that in the UK, where the accumulation of 12 points in a three-year period can lead to a suspension.

He said the current policy of fines did not provide an adequate deterrent.

He added that his department was already working on the law changes needed to bring in penalty points.

Deputy Lewis said the island needed to "crack down" on speeding motorists, as "some of the speeds that are happening now [are] just ludicrous".

Judges in Jersey are currently able to suspend licences for serious offences, but a series of minor offences typically attracts multiple fines.

Deputy Lewis said this was an insignificant punishment for those who can afford it.

A white paper on a new road safety strategy is to be presented to the States next year.

Any change to a points system will require the approval of a majority of States members.
