Jersey teachers offered new pay deal after strikes

The new pay offer includes an 8% rise this year

Teachers in Jersey have been offered a new pay deal after months of disruption caused by teaching strikes.

The deal offered by the States employment board includes an 8% rise this year and a rise of the rate of inflation plus 1% next year.

The National Education Union (NEU) has called it a "sensible approach".

NEU officials say that teachers will vote on whether to accept this latest offer.

Deputy Rob Ward said this shows a "positive relationship" between the States, trade unions and teachers that "is exactly what is needed for Jersey and, most importantly, for the children of Jersey".

The offer overrides previous offers and deals, meaning the letter sent to teachers in January, which imposed a pay deal unless teachers opted out, falls away.

Adrian Moss of NEU Jersey said: "I think the offer is a sensible approach, I think it's a good agreement that we've worked very hard to achieve."
