The Maccabees 'special' Latitude headline set

This weekend The Maccabees will headline their first ever UK festival, 10 years after the band started.

They will take to the main stage at Latitude Festival in Suffolk on Friday night.

The band say they won't have any special guests or huge surprises as they want to make it "as pure a Maccabees event" as they can.

Latitude has become known for giving British acts their first headline slot at a UK festival.

Foals, Alt-J and Two Door Cinema Club all stepped up to the top billing in previous years.

The Maccabees feel the time is now right to headline.

"From when it got announced, I think we all felt we were ready to do it," explains guitarist Felix White.

"I think we felt like we were due one and that we are ready to do it, so I don't think anyone feels like it is above us.

"We are just looking forward to it."

He says this is a celebration for all their fans who have seen them on their journey over the past 10 years.

"I hope a number of people are there," Felix says.

"Even some people I have never met, but always see their faces in the crowd for about 10 years.

"I hope they are all at Latitude because it would be nice to have that culmination of that 10 years of building up from playing in pubs.

"It is as much for them, for sticking with us."

And if you are one of those fans who has turned up at a lot of shows, Felix will probably know your face.

"Faces become quite familiar and I have a good skill of picking them out," he explains.

"And yes, there is loads and loads of eye contact.

"It used to be our thing that we would try and maintain eye contact until it became uncomfortable for the crowd.

"Orlando (frontman) would feel quite different about it, but I quite enjoy the confrontation."

As for what happens after this top slot, "We are hopefully going to do some big shows right at the end of the year which we haven't exactly worked out yet but that is going to be it," he tells us.

But after that, it will be some well earned time off.

"It only occurred to us a while ago that we haven't had more than a week off in about 10 years as a band, so it feels like this is a nice place to stop for a bit and get a bit of our lives back."
