WWE's first ever female Royal Rumble announced

The women of WWE will take part in their first ever Royal Rumble match.

Raw Commissioner, Stephanie McMahon, revealed the history-making event will take place on 28 January.

The match is expected to include competitors from the Raw and SmackDown divisions in what has been described as a "ground-breaking" event.

The announcement comes 30 years after the first men's Royal Rumble took place and will see competitors aim to throw each other over the top rope.

WWE tweeted that "history will be made" when the event takes place.

The men's Royal Rumble is one of the biggest events in the sport and has been taking place every year since 1988.

Past winners include The Rock, Triple H, John Cena, Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker.

There are currently 22 female wrestlers in the Raw and SmackDown divisions which means if the event is to include 30 people like in the men's match - then some non-main roster talent must be used.

Stephanie McMahon said it was an "honour" to announce the first ever women's Royal Rumble match.

The match could lead to some former favourites coming out of retirement, with the likes of Trish Stratus sparking speculation on social media.

She tweeted: "There's nothing WWE women cannot do. It's been a long-time coming - can't wait for the first ever women's Royal Rumble! Now…where dem boots?"

There's been loads of reaction to the news from current wrestlers.

Alexa Bliss tweeted: "Life is about moments. Tonight on RAW was one of those moments we will never forget."

Charlotte Flair said: "WWE is made up of extraordinary women. Steph McMahon's announcement is ground-breaking and exactly what both we and WWE Universe deserve."

Bayley tweted: "It's not a dream anymore, it's worth fighting for."

Fans of wrestling were really excited on Twitter with some saying they were crying tears of joy.

Melanie Tettleton tweeted: "The first women's Royal Rumble is happening. I'm in tears."

Hayley tweeted: "I actually have tears down my face, I am so proud."

Zoe Bliss wrote: "I'm just so happy".
