Pick your gritter: Which truck has the best name?

Just like the opening of the first advent calendar door or the hanging of decorations on the Christmas tree, it's time for the age old seasonal tradition of naming Scottish gritter trucks.

Known as "gritters," the trucks spread salt on the roads to make them safer during freezing weather by reducing the amount of ice on the surface.

In parts of the UK there is a public naming process for trucks in which people come up with creative names like Gritney Spears or Gritter Thunberg.

But it's in Scotland where the tradition has become an internet sensation as people from all over the world are encouraged to visit the Scottish government's gritter tracker website.

Once there, viewers can monitor and track the country's fleet of 240 vehicles, all with creative names. The website registers around 100,000 visitors per day.

New gritter names for 2023 include Keanu Freeze and Sir David Antenbrrr, but members of the public have until 16 January to submit new names.
