Mbappe hat-trick knocks Man City out of the Champions League

Mbappe's hat-trick leaves Man City feeling blue as their Champions League dreams end.

Manchester City were knocked out of this seasons UEFA Champions League last night after losing to Real Madrid.

The Blues were beaten 3-1 in the second leg , held in Madrid, with Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe scoring all three goals for the current European champions.

This came after a 3-2 defeat in the first leg at Manchester City's Eitihad Stadium.

The defeat means City join Celtic who were also knocked out of the competition at the play-off stage.

After the game Mbappe said: "I want to write history with Real Madrid."

The French forward joined Real in the summer on a free transfer.

After a slow start, he has got used to playing for his new team and has now scored 27 goals in all competitions so far this season.

"The adaptation period for me has ended and now I have to show my quality," said Mbappe. "I want to play well here, I want to make a mark on the season.

"We wanted to win. We wanted to qualify for the next round. For us it was only logical that Real reached the next round of the Champions League."

Mbappe made sure Madrid were well on their way to victory, scoring the first goal against City after just four minutes.

He went on to score two more either side of half-time securing his hat trick.

It wasn't until the final minutes that City got their only goal of the game, scored in injury time by Nico González in the 92nd minute.

A tough night for Manchester City

City Manager Pep Guardiola, said: "The best team won. They deserved it.

This is the benchmark. We have to accept it and move forward."

In previous seasons Manchester City have been strong in both the Premier League and Champions League, winning the treble in 2023, but this season has been different.

City are back in Premier League action on Sunday when they welcome league leaders Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool who made it through automatically to the knock out stages of the Champions League, were in Premier League action on Wednesday night drawing 2-2 away to Aston Villa.
