Zelda is getting her own game!

Nintendo has announced that Princess Zelda is getting her own game.

For the last 40 years her name has been the title of the popular gaming series, but players play as the Hylian hero Link.

Now for the first time, Zelda is getting her own game where she is the main playable character, called The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

The news was shared in the latest Nintendo Direct stream - a video announcement which shares what the game maker is working on - alongside a few other upcoming new games.

Take a look below to find out more...

Zelda can use a magical staff to make copies of items around Hyrule

Fans were shown a trailer for the new game which showed Link being swallowed up by a strange magical rift, leaving Zelda to save Hyrule.

Zelda can then be seen teaming up with a fairy called Tri, and using a magical staff called the Tri Rod to create 'echoes' or copies of items she finds in the world.

Players can use these echoes to help them to solve puzzles in the world, and battle enemies.

The game style looks more cartoon-like than the recent Tears of the Kingdom, and is similar to the 2019’s remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

This isn't the first time Princess Zelda has been playable in a game. Players can choose to fight as her in Hyrule Warriors, she’s playable as a ghost in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass; and she’s also playable in 1993's Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon. But, this is the first time she has starred as the main playable hero in her own Nintendo game.

The game is set to release on the Switch console on 26 September this year.

The Switch console is one of the third best-selling consoles of all time

Earlier this year Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that Nintendo were working on a sequel to the Switch console, which they would reveal some time before March 2025.

However, the president did make it clear ahead of the stream that there wouldn't be a Switch 2 announcement in this Direct.

Which has left fans wondering when the announcement will come.

The original Switch console sold more than 140 million units since its release in 2017, making it the third best selling console of all time, behind the Playstation 2 and Nintendo DS.
