The recorder used to be one of the most popular instruments with children in primary schools due to it being fairly easy to learn.
But other instruments have since caught up and overtaken the humble wind instrument.
Chris Cobb, the chief executive of ABRSM, which is the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music, said: "The recorder has been great... but schools are now looking at other instruments that can be used - the ukulele and acoustic guitar among them.
"Singing is also a key part of whole-class music-making."
