Gareth Southgate resigns as England manager

Gareth Southgate has stepped down as England manager after eight years in the role.
His announcement on Tuesday came just days after the England men's team were defeated in the Euros 2024 final.
Gareth Southgate played for England himself earlier in his career. He took up the role of manager in 2016.
During his time as manager, he oversaw 102 matches, winning 61.
His tournament record has been praised by fans with England winning more knockout games in his eight years as manager than in the 50 years previously.

Gareth Southgate took over as manager of the England men's team following the departure of Sam Allardyce who had just 67 days in the job.
In 2016, Southgate - who was the England under 21 manager at the time - was brought in temporarily, but he did so well in his opening games that he was given the job full time.
As manager he took England to one World Cup semi-final, one World Cup quarter-final and two European Championship finals.
Euro 2020 - which took place in 2021 - was England's first final in 55 years .
What did Southgate say in his resignation statement?
In an emotional statement, Gareth Southgate said:
"As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England," said Southgate.
"It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.
"But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter."

"Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager."
"The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent and they can win the trophy we all dream of. I am so proud of them," he added.
He also praised the England fans and added he will always be one himself.
"I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can.
He ended his statement with "Thank you, England – for everything."
What has been the reaction to his resignation?
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford said on social media: "Completely gutted. This will hurt for a while."
"I also want to say a special thank you to the boss for always believing in me during his time with us and I would like to wish him all the best in his next steps. Thank you Gareth."
Harry Maguire who missed the tournament because of injury wrote: "You made us all believe again - memories that will last forever. Thankyou boss."
Former England striker and broadcaster Gary Lineker wrote on social media "He brought pride, respect and a togetherness to England that we hadn’t seen for a long time."
In a statement Prince William, who is President of the Football Association, praised Southgate's "humility, compassion and true leadership under the most intense pressure and scrutiny" during his time as England manager.
"You should be incredibly proud of what you've achieved," he added.
Who will be the next England manager?
Football Association (FA) chief executive Mark Bullingham said the process to appoint Southgate's successor has already started and "we aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible".
He went on to say they wouldn't be commenting on speculation over who might be in the running.
BBC sports editor Dan Roan said he believes the FA are "very unlikely to restrict the selection process to just English managers".
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp are both names which have been discussed by sports commentators.
