Trump and Putin meeting: 'No deal' on Ukraine war

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US president Donald Trump didn't reach a peace deal at their talks in Alaska

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have left their peace talks in Alaska, without reaching an agreement.
The two presidents had come together to discuss the war in Ukraine and attempt to reach a ceasefire.
But, at a news conference following almost three hours of talks, the US president said: "there is no deal until there is a deal", adding "we didn't get there".
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited to the talks, but will meet with President Trump on Monday.

What happened

The two presidents didn't answer any questions from reporters at the event
The world's media had gathered after the meeting, to hear what the outcome would be.
However, after Presidents Putin and Trump gave short speeches, they refused to answer any questions for journalists, and left the room.
President Putin spoke first, speaking about a good atmosphere, and "mutual respect" before repeating that he was "sincerely interested" in ending the conflict in Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump said: "There were many, many points that we agreed on," adding that "great progress" had been made, but did not talk in detail about what had been said.
What's next?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with President Trump on Monday.
At the end of the conference, President Trump said "I'll probably see you again very soon," with President Putin replying "next time in Moscow" - suggesting that they should meet again in the capital city of Russia.
Donald Trump replied: "I'll get a little heat on that one, but I – I could see it possibly happening."
After the meeting President Trump had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of their meeting on Monday in the US capital, Washington DC.
What have other leaders said?

UK PM Keir Starmer and French President Macron have made statements after the meeting.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised President Trump's efforts to end the war in Ukraine but said that any next steps must involve President Zelensky.
"While progress has been made, the next step must be further talks involving President Zelenskyy. The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without him... Our unwavering support for Ukraine will continue as long as it takes."
A group of European leaders, including EU President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron, published a joint statement following the talks sending a similar message, that the "next step must now be further talks including President Zelensky".
Likewise President Zelensky responded to the Trump-Putin meeting saying, "all issues important to Ukraine must be discussed with Ukraine's participation, and no issue, particularly territorial ones, can be decided without Ukraine".
