The overall winner of The Bird Photographer of the Year 2025 award

The winners of the Bird Photographer of the Year 2025 competition have been revealed.

Photographers from all over the world entered more than 25,000 images into the competition, with the top prize going to this stunning photo of a bird in front of a total solar eclipse.

Photographers competed in eight different categories in the adult competition, including Best Portrait, Birds in the Environment, Bird Behaviour, Birds in Flight and Urban Birds.

There was also a special competition for young photographers.

Photographer Liron Gertsman, from Canada, was named as this year's grand prize winner for his incredible solar eclipse image, which was taken in Mexico.

"I spent well over a year of planning to capture my dream of a bird in front of the total solar eclipse," says Liron, adding he captured the photo in a moment which "lasts mere seconds."

Young Bird Photographer of the Year 2025 was awarded to Tomasz for this unusual photo

The Young Bird Photographer of the Year 2025 was awarded to Polish photographer Tomasz Michalski, for his silhouette of a black vulture.

Tomasz who also won Gold in the 15-17 category said he took the photo while visiting Nicaragua in Central America.

"I saw this big vulture drying its wings on a pole close to our hotel," he said

"I was being watched by the bird but it was very calm so I had a long time to photograph it."

Henry Sedin of Sweden took Gold in the 12 - 14 years category for this stunning photo

Henry Sedin of Sweden took Gold in the 12-14 years category.

The young photographer was visiting a National Park in Hawaii.

Entitled Jewel of the Forest it shows a species of Hawaiian Honeycreeper bird called 'I'iwi.

In his notes he said: "Flashes of red flickered through the trees, three to four 'I'iwi landing on a sunlit bush.

"With harsh light and no clouds above us, a black background... made the bird's scarlet feathers glow. "

The age 11 and under Gold award was given to Sasha Jumanca of Germany for her photo Graceful Flight over Wild Bloom.

It shows a bird called a European Bee-eater (which as its name suggests eats insects like bees, wasps, and hornets).

Sasha says she discovered a European Bee-eater colony in a nesting cliff.

"After many attempts, I finally captured this bird in flight, its wings fully spread, showing the beautiful colours of its feathers in great harmony with the flowers."

Called Feathered on panels, this photo won Gold in the Urban Birds category

This photo by Alex Pansier took Gold in the Urban Birds category and shows a bird resting on a huge field of solar panels alongside a highway in the Netherlands.

Photographer Alex said it is a "striking symbol of the tension between green energy and nature.

"As we transition to sustainable power, the infrastructure often claims scarce space that could have been left for wildlife. "

Entitled Feasting at Sunset, this photo of a cormorant won Franco Banfi Gold in the Birds in the Environment category

These birds, called Brandt's Cormorants eat fish and can dive underwater to catch them.

In this photo by Franco Banfi taken in Mexico, the bird is feasting on a school of fishes in the Californian sea.
